In het dagboek van 3 augustus begon ik met het Natalia-verhaal, met de vraag: wie helpt Natalia de winter door?

Misschien komt het doordat ik net terug ben van een vakantie in de zon, dat ik mededogen koester voor mensen die straks een koude winter tegemoet gaan. Een maand of wat geleden kreeg ik per e-mail het verzoek van een mij onbekende Russin haar te ontmoeten: ze wilde bij mij op bezoek komen. Nu komt mij dat om allerlei redenen niet uit, maar ik was benieuwd hoe serieus het was. Ik had ook al eens een aanbieding gehad van een Nigeriaanse firma die veel geld bij mij wilde stallen, die heb ik ook bijna gesméékt met mij in zee te gaan, maar die haakte helaas af. Ik antwoordde Natalia: ‘You’re welcome’.

Het duurde even, maar na verloop van tijd kwam er toch een berichtje: "Hello stranger. I am so happy to see that you have decided to reply, I see it is very short letter. It is all right because you are astonished to get my letter. I want you to know that I have only good intentions and I have not any secrets. The thing is that I will work in your country for three months or so and I would like to meet a nice man to fall in love or just be closest friends."

Ik heb altijd geleerd dat je geen buitenlandse woorden moet gebruiken en er niet van uit moet gaan dat elke lezer Engels kent, dus ik vertaal dit even uit de vrije hand:

"Het was wel een kort briefje, maar ik ben toch blij dat je reageert. Ik heb alleen maar goede bedoelingen en geen geheimen en ik wil maar één ding: drie maanden werken in jouw land en een leuke man ontmoeten."

Natalia schrijft verder dat ze niet in Rusland wil leven, want ze heeft daar geen kans (zal ik Derk Sauer eens vragen of hij nog niet een secretaresse extra kan gebruiken?). In Nederland wil ze overal wel werken: winkel, bar of restaurant, zodat ze haar Engels wat kan ophalen. Na drie maanden hoopt ze rijp te zijn voor een visum. En ze zit vol liefde en tederheid. Ze besluit met: "Kiss you, Natalia (this is my real name)!"

Zoals gezegd: mij komt het niet uit, maar wellicht is er een genereuze bezoeker die wel oren heeft naar deze Russin. Ik denk dat het haar niet veel uitmaakt, mij kent ze ook niet. Serieuze reacties zal ik naar haar doorsturen. Wel op voorwaarde dat wij als loggers op de hoogte worden gehouden van de vorderingen en als Natalia naar Nederland komt, dat we dat ook kunnen meebeleven. Misschien kunnen we met z’n allen nog wel een bruidsschatje bij mekaar sprokkelen.

Vervolgens mailde ik haar dat ik zelf niet geïnteresseerd ben in een relatie met haar, maar dat ik haar wellicht in contact zou kunnen brengen met voor haar wél interessante personen. Daar kwam al snel antwoord op. In het Engels. Dat ga ik allemaal niet vertalen, de man die straks verder met haar wil zal zich ook op z’n minst in deze taal moeten kunnen redden.

Kort gezegd: ze heeft een agentschap ingeschakeld dat ervoor moet zorgen dat ze drie maanden in het buitenland kan werken. Ze moet daar een adres hebben. Ze gaat vliegen vanuit Moskou.

Ik begon het inmiddels haast zielig te vinden. Als dat meisje nu zo graag een toekomst in een ander land wilde, had ik dan het recht zó met haar oprechte gevoelens te sjoemelen? Ik besloot open kaart te spelen en haar te schrijven dat ik onze correspondentie op min site wilde zetten, om zo de kans te vergroten dat ze met een echt interessante man in aanraking zou kunnen komen. Stel dat ze geschokt zou reageren: "O nee, ik wil alleen jou!" dan zou ik me nog eens kunnen bedenken.

Het antwoord kwam al snel. Helaas had ze mijn mailtje niet goed gelezen (was ik eigenlijk ook al een beetje bang voor).

When I get off plane in airport Moscow policeman asked about passport and he looked at me like I am any enemy,
I think all people here are a little crazy at terrorism.Life here in Moscow is expensive. I was going through some shops today and it is much more expensive than in our town. Food and all the general things. It is the same country but different prices, what a great change.

Tja, daar moet ik nog op antwoorden. Laten we de spanning er nog even inhouden. Ik heb inmiddels zelf al een aardig vermoeden welke kant dit opgaat, maar laten we niet op de zaken vooruitlopen. Typisch is wel dat ze de foto's op volgorde heeft genummerd, van 1 tot en met 10. Helaas ontbreken de nummers 6, 7 en 8. Misschien komen ze nog. Zal ik het eens vragen?

Aanvulling d.d. 14 augustus:

Vorige week donderdag (10 augustus) besteedde ik voor het laatst aandacht aan onze Russische vriendin Natalia. Het was toen al een paar dagen stil geworden: de laatste melding was dat ze in Moskou was gearriveerd en daar in de buurt van het vliegveld verbleef. Op 11 augustus mailde ik haar dat ze Airport Eelde wellicht niet hadden kunnen vinden, maar dat ze ook gerust naar Amsterdam Airport kon komen. Ook daar kwam geen reactie op. Heeft ze geen zin meer, heeft ze een andere man gekozen?

Ik wist toen trouwens al hoe de vork in de steel zat: het adres dat ze had opgegeven levert via google een hit op, die leidt naar een soortgelijke briefwisseling. Een zekere Lord Cuthbert Buster ging ook in op haar mail en kreeg dezelfde brieven. Waar ze bij mij stopte, ging ze (eerder) bij de Lord door. Haar volgende brief meldt dat ze het schema van de vlucht naar Londen heeft gekregen. Niets staat een entree in Engeland in de weg: I tasted my blood, such rule for foreign visitors wanting to visit your country! Thanks God, I am in good health, all of my tests are all right, I only need some vitamins I think it is the bad foods and long winters problem. I have to eat much more fruits and vegetables."

De aap is uit de mouw. Want dat was toch nog even de vraag: ging het hier om iemand die van plan was serieus naar Nederland te komen, zoals de juffrouw die de Groningse rechter wist te strikken, of was het een ander geval?

Lord C. Buster doet hetzelfde als wat ik van plan was: antwoorden dat hij best bereid is wat te betalen, maar dat het hem beter lijkt zelf naar Moskou te komen en dan samen terug te vliegen.

In zijn laatste mail schrijft Lord C. Buster dat, als hij vleugels had, hij wel naar haar toe zou willen vliegen en haar op zijn rug meenemen naar Engeland, ook al had hij de laatste tijd wat last van zijn rug. Maar helaas bloedt zijn hart te erg voor haar aanraking, haar kusjes en haar ticket en hij is zo opgewonden geraakt dat hij van de zuster in bed moet blijven.

Uit verder googelen blijkt Natalia Protasova (Protasowa) zich ook te bedienen van de namen Julia Fedorova (Fyodorova/Fedorowa) en Tatyana Gorbunowa. Wie er echt op de foto’s staan, is onduidelijk: de namen zijn in veel gevallen ontleend aan Russische artiesten of zakenmensen. Zo doet de echte Julia Fedorova iets met honden (Doberman), de echte Natalia Protasova is muzikante.

Ik vraag me af of ze nog reageert, of dat ze al nattigheid voelt.
